Queen's v Trinity: A History of the Boat Race

The University Boat Race 2004 - 2022

The University Boat Race is now firmly established as one of the highlights in the Queen's sporting calendar. After a three year absence due to the pandemic we are delighted to welcome back all university and school crews on 11 June this year.

First held in 2004 the event draws hundreds to the banks of the river Lagan annually in June. In the inaugural year of the event only one race was held. On the day Trinity senior men Senior Men took the honours beating Queen's over 4km .

The following year 2005 saw the Senior Women of both colleges 'lock oars' against each other. That year Queen's swept the board winning both Senior Men and Senior Women's races. In 2007 the event got even bigger with the introduction of both Fresher Men and Fresher Women races. In 2012 local schools were invited to take part against each other boosting the number of races to eight. To date Trinity are just edging the leaders board recording more wins in both the Senior Men and Senior Women's races.
