Queen’s University embarks on international sporting tour of the US

Queen's University Belfast is set to make a significant impact on the East Coast of the United States this summer through a series of engagements spanning sport, community, and business.

As part of the "Belfast Spirit, Global Goals" international sporting tour, a delegation of Queen’s staff and students will visit New York and Boston from 7 to 17 June.

The tour, led by Queen’s GAA Clubs, is a highlight of the University’s Sigerson 100 celebrations, which commemorate 100 years of Queen's participation in the premier intervarsity Gaelic Football competition for men. This event also coincides with the 30-year anniversary of the founding of the women's Gaelic Football team.

Across the tour, the men’s Sigerson team will play two exhibition games: one against New York County in the iconic Gaelic Park in New York City, and another against a USA select team at the Irish Culture Centre in Boston.

The 30-year anniversary of the women’s Gaelic Football team is particularly timely given Queen’s recent Athena Swan Gold Award for promoting gender equality. The women’s O’Connor Cup squad will also compete, taking on New York County and a Boston select team. Captain of the O’Connor Cup squad, Brid McNally, is excited about the opportunities the tour will bring.

In addition to the sporting events, staff and students will participate in community coaching sessions with children and young people in New York and Boston, meet with alumni and business delegates from First Derivatives and Options IT, and collaborate with Northeastern University in Boston.
