Grand Day Out at Castlewellan

The second installment of the eFlow Grand League rolls into Castlewellan this Saturday (28 April), with a record 406 crews set to do battle on the lake in the popular County Down forest park.

The Grand League series, set up in 2009, has proved a major success in boosting domestic rowing across Ireland, and a glance at the entry list for this weekend’s event points to its widespread appeal: all four provinces are well represented, with clubs as far afield as Skibereen, Cork, Galway and Dublin making the journey north for the regatta, hosted by Queen’s University and supported by new sponsors, eflow.

The most intriguing competition appears to be in the single sculls. In the women’s event, former world champion Sinead Jennings of St Michael’s rowing club in Limerick will be looking to reproduce her form of old, with the most likely challenger being new kid on the block Holly Nixon of Portora Royal School, silver medalist at last year’s world junior championships.

The men’s event will be no less competitive. Beijing Olympian Cathal Moynihan travels from Muckross Rowing Club in Kilkenny and will be joined by fellow Munster athlete Paul O’Donovan, who placed fourth at last year’s world junior championships. UCD stalwart David Neale will fly the flag for Dublin, whilst the Queen’s trio of Donald Evans, Rory O’Connor and Colin Williamson will be looking to show the speed they picked up on their recent trip to Italy and retain the title for the hosts.

Queen’s will be looking to build on their impressive start to the season, which saw them take a host of senior titles at the Irish University Championships and the first round of the Grand League, held on consecutive days over the Easter weekend at the National Rowing Centre in Cork.

MRI Appeal at Queen's Sport

The lunchtime legends swim team had the challenge of swimming the equivalent distance of the English Channel (21 miles – 1344 lengths) in the PEC pool. This charity swim was in aid of raising money for an MRI Scanner for the regional Children’s Hospital in Belfast. http://www.mriscannerappeal.org/

We made landfall in France in 9 hours 30 minutes, as everybody really gunned it when they were swimming their leg of the relay. We continued to swim until 1930, and clocked up a total of 28 miles in the 12.5 hour slot. Some swimmers accompanied the swimmer doing their leg and a total of 36 miles was swam on the day. It was a great effort by everyone.

The fundraising total today (20th March) stands at £3250 with a target of £4000. With a few more donations and offline donations to come in, we will hopefully reach the target. If you would like to donate then here is the website: http://www.justgiving.com/MRIChannelSwim

The guys at the  http://www.mriscannerappeal.org/   are very keen to be involved in other fundraising/charity events, and i know that one of the swimmers intends to run the Belfast marathon under their banner! Please feel encouraged to contact them directly, or anyone you know.

Almost 200 students took part in the annual Inter Sports Night at the PEC and Upper Malone on Monday 5 December that was organised by Queen’s Sport and the Students’ Union.  The evening of activities included a range of competitions between clubs with some friendly competition between related Sports..  The highlight at the PEC was the basketball clubs impressive performance against the Netball club in Netball and the Dodgeball competition that added to the carnival atmosphere.  At Upper Malone the major Team Sports at Queen’s (Rugby, GAA, Soccer and Hockey) got a chance to show off their talents in a hybrid competition were rules and muscles were flexed on the night with some stiff competition between the ladies sports with the lacrosse club performing well against the Hurling and Hockey Clubs.

The competition and craic continued late on into the night with a Quiz at the NEW clubhouse followed by food and some drinks and presentation to the most valuable players (MVP) in each sport.

Queen's Hurlers make History

The successful Hurlers

Queens hurlers made a little bit of history on Thursday 1 December 2011 when they won the Division 2 All-Ireland league title by defeating local rivals St Mary’s 0-15 to 0-7 in Casement Park under lights.  It was back in 1982 that they last won this title and Queens had not contested an All-Ireland competition cup game since they lost a Fitzgibbon final narrowly to UCC some twenty four years ago. There is a link between that side and the present winners in 72 year old Queens selector Dick Looby, who was manager back in 1987.

Queens had to win the league the hard way after finishing second in their group to St Mary’s who defeated them 4 weeks earlier at the Dub 2-16 to 1-9.  St Mary’s qualified automatically for a semi-final while Queens had to negotiate a tricky quarter-final away to Sligo IT.  This they did successfully winning 1-17 to 1-13.  St Mary’s had a facile win over Mary Immaculate training college while Queens took on Munster king pins, IT Tralee. In a tough game the Malone Road outfit emerged worthy winners 2-16 to 2-6 to set up the all Ulster final.

A crowd of over 300 spectators greeted the two teams as they took to the field in Casement.  St Mary’s entered the game as strong favourites having been undefeated in the league campaign and with a 10 point victory secured over Queens just over a month ago. However it was Queens who settled first opening the scoring after 7 minutes with a well taken free from 50 metres by O’ Donavon Rossa player Michael Turley.  St Mary’s replied converting a free through Cushendall and Antrim star Shane McNaughton. Michael Turley added two further frees before McNaughton converted two of his own for St Marys. Turley again this time from a 65 put Queens a point up only to see McNaughton match him in the free stakes to leave the scores 4 points a piece after 25 minutes.

At this stage Queens full forward and Antrim player Conor Carson recorded the first point from play 21 metres in front of goal after losing his marker.  Moments later and Queens conceded a soft free 30 metres from goal which McNaughton dispatched over the bar to leave the sides level pegging 5 points a piece.  Queens then took control of midfield where Bobby Joe McKinley and Sparky McGuigan were able to deliver better ball into their forwards. Conor Carson again came off the full-back to win possession which he sweetly lofted over the bar.  Not to be outdone Michael Turley wriggled free of the right corner back and struck his first point from play to give Queens a two point lead at half time, 0-7 to 0-5.

After half time Queens ceased control of the game with their defence totally dominant and conceding fewer frees. Led by Down star Conor Woods at centre-halfback and flanked by Loughiel’s Tony McCloskey and Armagh’s Conor Coulter Queens dominated possession either breaking ball to their midfielders or delivering cross field balls into the corners.  With Shane McNaughton now well shackled by Ballycran’s Paraic Flynn, St Mary’s were left to live of scraps. Meanwhile Queens went further ahead with scores from Antrim’s Michael Armstrong and Darrach Hobbs from Clare. With McKinley now sweeping effectively in midfield Sparky McGuigan was able to break forward with more frequency adding 3 points from play. McNaughton pulled a point back with another free but Queens went further in front with points from Conor Carson and Michael Turley.

On the 3 quarter mark McNaughton scored the last of the St Mary’s points with his usual accuracy from a free.  Sean Burke at centre three quarters won the resultant puck out and promptly struck it over the bar. With minutes to go St Mary’s were forced to try to score goals but full backs Mark Scally, Aidrian Downey and Flynn easily coped with the high ball while the half backs dropped deep to provide extra cover against St Mary’s runners.  More than once St Mary’s turned over possession by over carrying.  There were joyous scenes on the final whistle with Queens victorious 0-15 to 0-7.

Queens Captain Conor Coulter was presented with the cup by the Chair of the Higher Education Committee Jack Devanney, himself a Queens graduate.  Coulter thanked the management team and selectors and paid a special tribute to the defeated St Mary’s team. “You did us a really big favour by giving us an absolute trimming 4 weeks ago at the Dub.  It drove us on and made us work harder and pull together as a panel and as a team. You set the bar very high by topping the group and by getting to the final undefeated so we knew we would have to produce a special performance if we were to win tonight.”

Queens: Paddy Heaney; Mark Scally; Aidrian Downey; Paraic Flynn; Conor Coulter (Captain); Conor Woods; Tony McCloskey; Ciaran McKinley; Sean McGuigan (0-3); Charles Gilmore; Sean Burke (0-1); Michael Armstrong (0-1); Darrach Hobbs (0-1); Conor Carson 0-3; Michael Turley (0-6); Subs: Peter McKeague for Hobbs; Donal Hughes for Gilmore and Ciaran Reid for Turley

Life-changing opportunities for Queen’s students through Sport

Queen’s announced the winners of its Special Achievement Sports Awards at the 2011 University’s annual Blues Dinner on a night that highlighted the impact involvement in Sport can have on students.

Held in association with Powerade, awards went to U21 World Pool Champion, Martin Quigg, former Irish International Rugby Player and Queen’s Coach, Brian Robinson, Men’s Senior 8 Rowing Crew and World University Rowing Bronze medalists and Laura Loughlin from the Queen’s Athletics Club.

The University also acknowledged the performances of its Ladies Hockey and Rowing squads, Camogie Club who retain the Purcell Cup and Squash who won the 2011 Irish University Championships.

Martin Quigg, picked up the coveted Sports Achievement (Individual) Award for his performances with the Snooker, Billiards and Pool Club throughout the year. A Northern Ireland international, Martin was part of that team who won the U21 World Pool Championships and also claimed the 2011 All Ireland Pool Championships.

Coach of the Year went to Brian Robinson who famously scored 4 tries for Ireland at the 1991 Rugby World Cup and has recently guided Queen’s Rugby into All Ireland League Division 2 and lifted the Ulster Senior Cup and was the first team to win the inaugural Ulster Club Rugby 7’s in 2011.

Winner of the Team Sports Achievement Award went to the Men’s Senior 8 Rowing crew who had an outstanding 2010 with 7 out of the crew representing Ireland at the 2010 World University Rowing Championships in Hungary claiming a bronze medal and also winning the 2010 British and Irish University Championships.

Clean Sweep for Queen’s at the 2011 Ramada Plaza University Boat Race

Queen's University triumphed on the River Lagan after winning all four races in the annual university boat race supported by Ramada Plaza, Belfast and Department for Social Development.

Both men's and women's crews took to the River Lagan on Saturday 11 June in the eighth year of the race, going up against Trinity College Dublin, and for the first time, University College, Cork
Modelled on the classic Oxford and Cambridge races, the teams rowed a 2.2km route along the Lagan before racing to the finish line at Queen's University Boat Club, which has been in existence since 1931.

Once the weather had decided to remain sunny, the 450 strong crowd at the Queen’s University Boat House enjoyed a great day of racing. A first win by Queen's University helped kick off a jubilant atmosphere as onlookers enjoyed live jazz and a sizzling barbecue.
The novice men dispatched Trinity's novices with a clinical display of power and ability making short work of the Dublin side.

In the senior women's race UCC were outclassed as the hosts eased home by approximately 200 metres after dominating from start to finish.
"We were delighted to have held them off and now we can look forward to the Ladies Henley Regatta at the weekend," said Queen's captain Zoe Patterson.

The blue ribbon race of the day was the men's senior race with Queen's crossing the line with well over 100 metres to spare.Queen's captain Charles Cunningham diplomatically paid tribute to his crew's vanquished opponents after the race when he turned his thoughts to more daunting assignments that lie ahead.

"I'd like to thank UCC for giving us a good race and the result should set us up nicely for the rest of the season, we will be racing at Marlow next weekend in preparation for the Henley Regatta and that's our major focus now. We were the Irish team that got farthest last year when we had one crew in the quarter-finals and one in the semi so we want to do even better than that this time around."

Have you got what it takes?

The Sporting Academies and Bursary awards supported by Ulster Bank continue to develop and support some of our top athletes in the province. The vision of both schemes is to focus on developing our top athletes so that they are in a position to achieve sporting success and development, during and after their time at Queen's University. The programme provides a number of benefits to help student players achieve at both sporting and academic levels.

The scheme has been developed to offer recipients a comprehensive package including:

Sports Science support.

Free use of facilities.

Free sports clothing.

Financial assistance.

Queen's has a proud tradition of producing some of Ireland's elite sports people. It is widely known that school leavers regard sport as a high priority when they are choosing their third level institution. As there are currently no sport-specific related courses on offer, the scholarship package that is available via the academy and bursary system can play a vital role in persuading such students to choose Queen's.

The Bursary awards are open to competitiors in any sport. There are currently four Sporting Academies at Queen`s University - Rugby Union (established in 2002), GAA (2004), Soccer (2008) and Rowing (2008).

Queen's launches the 8th annual 'Race Round the Rive' 5K run

Queen’s launches the 8th annual ‘Race Round the River’ 5K run

Queen’s launches the 8th annual ‘Race Round the River’ 5K run

From recreational runners to top class athletes – hundreds of people are expected to take part in the 8th annual Queen’s University ‘Race Round the River’ 5K run in Belfast.

The race, organised by students in the Queen’s Athletics Club and in association with Powerade, will take place on 30 March on the Ormeau Embankment and is traditionally a warm up event for some athletes taking part in the Belfast City Marathon.

Entrants to the race this year will take advantage of new ‘chipped timing’ technology where an electronic chip is placed into the runner’s footwear and automatically tracks their race time.

John Saulters, Queen’s 5k Event Co-ordinator said: “This is a unique race in that it is student led and organised but is open to the public.  The course is great for beginners as it is a flat course but is also a great timed challenge for stronger runners.

He added: “It is fantastic that the event continues to be supported by Powerade and ASICS, brands associated with sporting performance. The race is one of the fastest 5k races open to all in Ireland and we hope to have even more people competing this year and encourage everyone to get involved.”

Hundreds of pounds worth of prize money is on offer for fastest runners in various categories and registration is now open. For more information visit www.queens5k.co.uk

Coach of the Year Award

Coaching success at Queen’s Blues Awards

Coaches, the often unsung heroes of the sporting world, were the focus of celebrations at Queen’s on Thursday 10th June 2010 when the cream of the University’s sporting talent gathered for the annual Blues Awards.

Around 120 students from across the University were awarded Full or Half Blues in recognition of their sporting achievements. Joining them to present the awards will be former Northern Ireland soccer international Jim Magilton. Queen’s Blues Awards Dinner is sponsored by Powerade.

Speaking before the event Jim Magilton said: “I am delighted to meet the students of Queen’s, who have had a tremendous year in so many sports, and I congratulate all of this evening’s winners on their achievements.

“As a player and manager, I know that success doesn’t come easily. Of course, it requires talent, hard work and dedication. But that will only get you so far without the support of an inspirational coach and access to top-class training and playing facilities.

“Queen’s is obviously aware of this. Its investment in coaching and facilities has no doubt benefitted this evening’s award winners, and future generations of sportspeople will continue to reap the rewards of the University’s commitment to its sporting talent.”

Queen’s Sport has had a particularly successful year, with the men’s rugby and ladies hockey teams winning league promotions, and Queen’s Senior Men’s Eights rowing their way to become the fastest university men’s boat crew in the UK and Ireland.

Queen's Rugby lifting the 2010 AIB All Ireland League Division 3 Title

Queen’s snooker team were crowned British University Champions, while the trampoline team sprung to victory as Irish Intervarsity Champions and the Taekwondo team took two gold and three silver medals at the British National Championships.

There were also successes for netball, camogie, orienteering, badminton, swimming and shooting in tournaments across the UK and Ireland.

Queen’s rowing coach, Mark Fangen-Hall, who guided Queen’s senior men and novice ladies crews to victory in the Ramada Hotel Shaw’s Bridge University Boat Race last Saturday, said: “The single most important investment a sports body can make is in its coaches. Without consistent and up-to date guidance, no team or athlete can ever hope to succeed on a regular basis.

“The coach is the centre point of all decisions, allowing individuals and teams to concentrate on their game plan rather than devising it. They must disassociate themselves from the social aspect of the club so they can make difficult decisions at the right time. A good coach will allow the team to develop and fulfil their potential in a way that sees individual techniques improve and the team bond strengthen.”

Bursary Awards

Queen's Sports stars receive 2010 Bursary Awards

Twenty-five of Queen’s young sporting stars representing 13 different sports have been awarded sports bursaries from the University.

The students were presented with their bursaries by David McCann, 2010 Commonwealth Games Cycling Bronze Medallist.

The Bursary programme, which is sponsored by the Ulster Bank, aims to provide cutting edge support services for high achieving sportsmen and women students. It complements ongoing support for high performers through the already established GAA, Rugby, Rowing and Soccer Academies. More than 100 Queen’s students already benefit from these programmes.

The Bursary Awards are available to current students who have achieved a high standard in their particular sport. The scheme offers recipients a comprehensive package, including sports science support, specialist sports medical care, free use of facilities, free gear and financial assistance for the costs of training at such a high level. The awards are designed to give top sporting individuals the best opportunity to develop their talent during their time at the University.

Four students received Gold Bursary awards. They were students Mark Butler, Eoin MacDomhnaill, Jonathan Mitchell and Colin Williamson who were part of the Irish rowing team which won bronze at the 2010 World University Rowing Champions in Szeged, Hungary.

Queen’s Student Sport Development Manager, Karl Oakes highlighted the importance of providing the best possible service to these top athletes

He said: "Sport is an integral part of the student experience at Queen’s and Queen’s Sport prides itself on the fact that it delivers a service to all students at all levels.

“Our investment in coaching, facilities and the support we offer helps our talented students get the results they deserve.”

Tanya Waters, Ulster Bank Product  Manager for students says 'Ulster Bank is delighted to support Queen's students who have shown huge commitment and dedication so they can excel at their individual sports', adding that she hopes the awards will 'help these students to further develop and maximise their sporting potential while at Queen's University.'

Swim for Charity at Queen's
Swimathon

Swim for Charity at Queen's

With Swimathon 2011 just around the corner, Queen’s Sport is encouraging people in Belfast to take part in their sessions on Friday 8 April – Sunday 10 April 2011 . The Physical Education Centre (PEC) is one of 580 pools across the UK taking part in Swimathon, from the 8–10 April 2011. Take on the swim of your life, and join thousands of other swimmers in the world’s biggest fundraising swim for Marie Curie Cancer Care and the Swimathon Foundation.

Why not enter Swimathon 2011 and get fit for spring. Swimming is proven to be a great form of exercise whatever your ability, to help you relax your mind and body, and to help build endurance, muscle strength and cardio-vascular fitness.  For that extra bit of impetus, Duncan Goodhew MBE, Olympic gold medallist and Swimathon President, has created a six week training programme which is available on www.swimathon.org

For those who prefer to cheer on from the sidelines, they can still do their bit by sponsoring local people who are taking on the Swimathon challenge by going to ‘sponsor a swimmer’ on www.swimathon.org. Alternatively, they can volunteer to be a lap counter by emailing: Kevin Murray: k.murray@qub.ac.uk to register.

The majority of funds raised will allow Marie Curie Nurses to provide free care to people with terminal cancer and other illnesses in their own home or in one of the charity’s hospices.

Kevin Murray PE & Sport Development Officer at Queen’s Sport said ‘Swimathon is the perfect event to train for, and participate in, with your friends and family. You can set yourself a challenge to work towards, as well as raising money for charity.’

Duncan Goodhew emphasises that, ‘Swimathon is a great way of raising money to help thousands of terminally ill people across the UK. Swimming is also up with the highest calorie burning activities, such as running: it works and tones your entire body. It also promotes more supple, flexible muscles, tendons and ligaments, which has long term health gains. So shake off those winter blues, get down to your local leisure centre and start training for the swim of your life.’

Swimathon 2011 is open to everyone, encouraging people to challenge themselves to swim 1.5k, 2.5k or the ultimate 5k. For those interested in joining forces with friends, colleagues or family, the Team 5k challenge can also be completed by up to five people together.  Take the plunge and help make Swimathon 2011 a huge success.

To find out more about Swimathon or to enter the 2011 challenge visit www.swimathon.org.
