Since the university’s foundation, sport has played an important and integral part in the Queen’s student experience. The University’s long tradition of sporting excellence has co-existed with the academic excellence for which Queen’s is internationally renowned.

Queen's has a proven track record of producing some of Ireland's elite sports people. It is widely known that school leavers regard sport as a high priority when they are choosing their third level institution.

There are currently four Sporting Academies at Queen`s University - Rugby Union (established in 2002), GAA (2004), Soccer (2008) and Rowing (2008). Queen's Sport will hope to create another two academies by 2014. They were created not only to provide a high performance culture within those sports but also to support the wider strategic objectives for sport at the university in promoting recreational and community initiatives. There are currently staff dedicated to GAA, Rugby, Rowing and Hockey based at Queen’s PEC and Upper Malone.

Academy scholarships

Queen’s now has a number of Academies including GAA, Rugby, Soccer and Rowing with over 100 scholarships available every year. Queen’s Sport has also supported students competing at a high level in a range of competitions including Irish University Championships, British University Games and the World Student Games.

These schemes allow athletes to enhance their performance by providing access to the high performance and lifestyle centre services as well as free access to the University’s fantastic sports facilities and excellent coaching.

The Academies also promote recreational and community-based initiatives providing opportunities for students to take part in sport on a playing or administrative capacity. Administrative scholarships are available through the scheme.
